200 years of Thonet

Thonet – Contemporary since 1819

For German furniture manufacturer Thonet, 2019 is a year of milestone anniversaries. The company from Frankenberg is celebrating its 200th anniversary, looking back on two centuries of iconic furniture design, while also celebrating 100 years of Bauhaus.

Today and in the past, Thonet furniture has been a part of the lives of many people all around the world. Some appreciate them as classics with history and patina, others as timeless design icons with a collector’s value, and people of a younger generation perceive the style and culture which a Thonet original represents. Thonet furniture can be found wherever people meet, network, have a rest or pursue mobile work – at home, in waiting areas and lounges, in offices or cafés. For many they are familiar cultural assets that are truly timeless and appreciated as well as inherited.

To mark the special occasion in 2019, a special presentation at the Brera Design District highlights both the products that define and shape the company’s DNA – bentwood as well as tubular steel classics – and contemporary products by renowned designers such as Sebastian Herkner, Stefan Diez or Studio Besau Marguerre. A special focus will be placed on the program extension for Herkner’s design of the wooden chair 118. After introducing new barstool versions in two different heights and an upholstered version earlier this year, Thonet will present six exclusive high gloss finishes in Milano for the very first time.
