Haus by the Sea
Haus by the Sea
The “Haus by the Sea” exhibition is a showcase of works by students from the industrial design department of the Muthesius Academy of Art and Design in Kiel, Germany's most northern independent art and design University.
The range of works comprises a selection of industrial design projects representing varying approaches and project types. From yearlong deep dive industrial design projects to fast and spontaneous experimental journeys into consumer culture the “Haus by the sea” exhibition represents a curated selection of works by Students from pre graduate BA level as well as post graduate MA level.
By searching for the particular instead of the common, the industrial design department in Kiel aims to develop a design practice that connects unique visual codes with product cultures while trying to push forward global industrial design and technology.
For the “Haus by the Sea” project the curators asked the designers to respond to a design brief which challenged them to work with the notion of local product culture, technological innovation and visual identity. Being from a variety of international backgrounds the question of identity in a context of visual coding, material selection and user scenario became the driving factor in deciding to show the work to the global public.
The city of Kiel is a unique place for both its geographical location as a port city on the Baltic Sea as well as being a centre for marine science, shipbuilding and the home of the world economic institute. Building on the tradition of technological innovation and scientific research, the industrial design course at the Muthesius Academy of Art and Design has developed a strong role to propose, develop and promote a positive socio cultural change.
The curators of the exhibition are Mirko Ihrig and Prof. Martin Postler.
