Freitag is the story of an idea, an intuition by Markus Freitag who in 1993 thought he’d give used truck tarps taken from a transport company a new life turning them into cycle bags. The story starts here and becomes a global success, the format implies the use of recycled materials, besides truck tarps, air chambers and safety belts, from which the first prototype of Messenger Bag will be made and in short time become a design icon showcased at Moma.

We can say that Freitag is the pioneer of circular economy, a visionary brand in the timing and usage of recycled materials, in such a way that Daniel, when asked about the topic, remembers that “When we started I didn’t even know the English word ‘sustainability’”. The motto of the company is “We think and act in cycles” because in their model, just like in the biological life cycle, every end is a new beginning. And their model evolved developing a 100% biodegradable fabric made with hemp, linen and modal – a fibre obtained from cellulose extracted from beech wood chips.

Since 1993, Freitag, founded by the two brothers and designers Daniel and Markus Freitag, has been giving new life to used truck tarps, turning them into functional bags and accessories. The company, based in Zurich, offers its young customers a range of over 80 different products and biodegradable textiles grown in Europe and called F-ABRIC.
